Natural Fall wellness tips: Delicious food

Simple ways to enhance your health naturally this season.

A little fresh air, a delicious meal, and a few healthy habits can go a long way.

November brings a little bit of everything to Southern California. One day it's warm and sunny, the next it's windy and chilly. Meanwhile, holiday gatherings are beginning, schedules are filling up, and delicious food is everywhere.

With so much going on, taking care of yourself can feel like one more thing on your to-do list.

But what if enhancing your health naturally could be simple?

This month, we will focus on two everyday essentials: the air around us and the food on our plates.

1. What's in the Air You're Breathing?

Have you noticed how dry the air can feel when the Santa Ana winds arrive in Murrieta and Temecula? Wind can stir up dust, and when wildfire smoke is present, outdoor air quality may become unhealthy. Then the rain comes, and the moisture feels suffocating.

A few simple ways to be more mindful of your environment:

  • Check the air quality. Visit air quality sites and apps like AirNow.gov before heading outside for a long walk or outdoor workout.

  • Pay attention to your indoor air. When smoke, dust, humidity, and allergen levels are high, keep windows closed and consider a properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner.

  • Give your home a break from added irritants. Reduce unnecessary scented plug-ins, sprays, candles, and other sources of indoor particles. These smell-good scents affect our health more than we realize.

  • Enjoy outdoor time when conditions are good. Fresh air and gentle movement can be wonderful parts of your daily routine.

You don't need a perfect environment. A little awareness helps you make better choices for yourself and your family.

2. A Full Plate Can Still Be a Healthy Plate

Thanksgiving is almost here!

And while the holidays are filled with wonderful foods, they're also a great opportunity to try seasonal ingredients and simple cooking techniques.

Healthy eating doesn't have to mean giving up all the foods you love.

Although avoiding white processed sugar and flour can seem impossible during this time of year, there are plenty of fun and easy alternatives. Sugar substitutes: coconut sugar and date sugar are my favorite! If you need that white granulated sugar texture when baking, find a brand that still contains the raw ingredient, like RAW Sugar or Morena. Flour substitutes are also popular now, from blends from brands like Bob's Redmill to single ingredients like chickpea, almond, and rice flour.

Add more color, variety, and balance to the meals you're already making.

Think about a plate with:

  • Colorful vegetables: roasted carrots, squash, Brussels sprouts, or green beans.

  • A satisfying protein: turkey, chicken, fish, beans, or lentils.

  • A favorite side: potatoes, whole grain rice, heirloom grains, or a traditional holiday dish.

  • Something fresh: sliced oranges, apples, pears, or a simple green salad.

Enjoy your food, slow down, and give yourself time to recognize when you're comfortably satisfied. It's easy to be caught up in the stores and bakeries with the bulk items and great prices. Take time to search and spend the money on mom-and-pop companies that will serve your family well.

An Easy Fall Meal Idea

Roasted Harvest Bowl

Roast cubed butternut squash and carrots with olive oil, rosemary, and a little garlic at 425°F until tender, about 25–30 minutes.

Add cooked turkey or chickpeas, a handful of fresh spinach, and a squeeze of lemon.

It's colorful, satisfying, and an easy way to turn seasonal ingredients into lunch or dinner.

3. Don't Forget the Everyday Basics: Natural Fall Wellness Tips

Sometimes we spend so much time searching for new wellness solutions that we overlook the simple things we can practice every day.

This November, make room for:

  • Drinking water regularly throughout the day.

  • Getting enough sleep.

  • Eating a variety of nutritious foods.

  • Washing your hands, especially before preparing meals.

  • Enjoying regular movement and meaningful time with the people you love.

These habits are a practical foundation for seasonal wellness.
